Description
Located on the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin has been a distillery since 1816. The dram’s coastal, smokey character is directly influenced by the distillery’s lengthy fermentation times, high peat levels in the barley, and patient aging in seaside warehouses. The distillery retains stronger congeners and oils by using very slow distillation runs, prolonged fermentations, and heavily peated malt.
The Lagavulin 16 has a rich, full-bodied taste that starts with salted caramel and peat and progresses to dark chocolate, espresso, and black pepper. Dried fruit and a lovely, almost coastal note may be found in the mid-palate. You get roasted wood, dried fruit, and tannic structure without getting rid of the peatiness because the spirit ages for sixteen years, mostly in ex-bourbon casks with a significant amount of sherry butts.
